Rafter Tschiertschen

Tschiertschen is a remarkably intact Walser village with a distinct sense of continuity. Unlike most Walser settlements, it was originally inhabited by Romansh speakers, with German only becoming dominant towards the end of the 16th century. Much of the village centre, visible on early 20th-century postcards, has remained largely unchanged to this day. The valley’s history is closely tied to agriculture. Until around 1930, hemp was widely cultivated here - a legacy preserved in the name of the Schanfigg valley. Today, hemp is once again grown locally in a THC-free form, reflecting a renewed appreciation for traditional, sustainable practices. Despite its position on a north-eastern slope, Tschiertschen enjoys generous sunlight throughout the year. In summer, the sun rises between the Weissfluh peaks and sets only behind the Calanda massif, giving the village long, bright days. In winter, the light follows a lower arc around the surrounding ranges and the village’s local mountain, the Gürgaletsch. The Gürgaletsch forms the heart of the small, varied family ski area, offering relaxed skiing close to the village. Outside the winter months, the landscape opens up for outdoor life, with walking routes and an idyllic tennis court set into the alpine surroundings. Quiet, lived-in, and carefully preserved, Tschiertschen was named the most beautiful mountain village in Graubünden by Graubünden Tourism in 2019 — a recognition that reflects not spectacle, but balance, restraint, and continuity.
